Job Position: Occupational Therapist Assistant
Location: Charlotte, NC 28262
Birch Agency is hiring a part-time COTA for one day per week/6 hours per week. The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) provides school-based occupational therapy services under the supervision of a licensed Occupational Therapist (OTR/L). The COTA supports students in developing the fine motor, sensory processing, visual-motor, and self-regulation skills necessary for success in the educational environment. This position collaborates with teachers, staff, and families to promote student participation and independence in academic and daily routines.
Implement occupational therapy interventions as directed by the supervising OTR/L according to the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan.
Provide direct and indirect therapy services to support students’ access to and participation in the school curriculum.
Assist in the development of therapeutic activities and materials to address students’ fine motor, visual-perceptual, and sensory processing needs.
Document therapy sessions, progress notes, and data collection in compliance with district and state regulations.
Monitor student progress and communicate observations to the supervising OTR/L and educational team.
Support the integration of therapeutic strategies within classroom routines and assist teachers with accommodations and modifications.
Participate in IEP meetings, staff consultations, and professional development as requested.
Maintain therapy equipment and supplies, ensuring a safe and organized work environment.
Adhere to professional, ethical, and confidentiality standards as required by law and professional code of conduct.
Education: Associate’s degree from an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program.
Licensure/Certification:
Current certification from the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).
Valid state license or authorization to practice as a COTA.
Experience:
Experience working with children or in a school setting preferred.
Knowledge of sensory integration, fine motor development, and school-based therapy practices.
Skills:
Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
Ability to follow treatment plans and work independently within the therapy scope of practice.
Flexibility in adapting interventions to meet diverse student needs.
School-based settings including classrooms, therapy rooms, playgrounds, and other educational environments.
Collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of educators, therapists, and support staff.
